The Evolution of Minesweeper

I’ll post a tale of my woes in getting various old versions of DOS and Windows running in VMWare Player at some point in the future. In the meantime check this out:

The Evolution of Minesweeper

From top to bottom:

  • Minesweeper for Windows XP
  • Minesweeper for Windows 95
  • Minesweeper for Windows 98
  • Mines for DOS (running on FreeDOS 1.0)
  • Minesweeper for Windows 3.11 for Workgroups (running on MS-DOS 6.22)

Anybody who doubts the existence of human progress need only look at this to be instantly reassured.

Apparently Minesweeper in Windows Vista does look different. Apparently it is blue instead of grey and has been rewritten so that you can have flowers instead of mines. Isn’t that nice?
